Adam Gopnik (born in Philadelphia on August 24, 1956) is an American writer and essayist, and a long-time contributor to *The New Yorker* magazine, for which he has written since 1986. He is best known for his work as the magazine's Paris correspondent from 1995 to 2000. This experience inspired his highly successful memoir, *Paris to the Moon* (2000), which was followed by *Through the Children's Gate* (2006), chronicling his return to New York. His essays range from art and literary criticism to culture, food, and daily life, with a style that is both erudite and accessible. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including three National Magazine Awards for Essays and Criticism and the George Polk Award for Journalism. For his contribution to French culture, the French government also named him a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
