Adi Zulkadry is an Indonesian artist and a central figure of the Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru (New Art Movement), which emerged in the 1970s. Along with other avant-garde artists, he challenged the aesthetic and institutional conventions of Indonesian art of the era, promoting a conceptual and experimental approach. His career is marked by provocative works that questioned the very definition of an artwork, often using everyday objects and criticizing the art market. His most notable works include "Lukisan-lukisan Celana Jeans Levis" and, especially, the installation "Indonesia 1975, Kenikmatan dan Penderitaan," a neon sign presented at the historic GSRB exhibition in Jakarta in 1975. Although he is not primarily known for formal awards, his greatest recognition lies in his pioneering role and the lasting impact that his work and the movement have had on the evolution of contemporary art in Indonesia, paving the way for new forms of expression and criticism.
