
Akemi Negishi
Akemi Negishi (根岸明美, Negishi Akemi; Tokyo, March 26, 1934 – Kawasaki, March 11, 2008) was a Japanese actress. She made her film debut in a leading role in *Anatahan* (1953), directed by the Austro-American filmmaker Josef von Sternberg, a performance that brought her immediate international recognition. Her career is closely linked to director Akira Kurosawa, for whom she acted in several major films such as *I Live in Fear* (*Ikimono no kiroku*, 1955) and *The Lower Depths* (*Donzoko*, 1957). For her performances in the latter film and in *Shitamachi*, she won the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1957. She continued to work steadily in film and television, often in supporting roles, appearing again for Kurosawa in *Dodes'ka-den* (1970). Her career, which spanned over four decades, is characterized by a strong screen presence and notable dramatic intensity.
