Albert Bassermann

Albert Bassermann was a celebrated German actor, one of the most highly regarded in German-speaking theater and cinema during the first half of the twentieth century. A prominent member of Max Reinhardt's company, he was forced to leave Germany in 1933 with the rise of Nazism due to the Jewish heritage of his wife, actress Else Schiff. After emigrating to the United States, he embarked on a second, prolific career in Hollywood as a distinguished character actor. He appeared in successful films such as *Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet* (1940), *Since You Went Away* (1944), and the British classic *The Red Shoes* (1948). For his powerful performance in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller *Foreign Correspondent* (1940), he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was also the second bearer of the prestigious Iffland-Ring, the highest honor for a German-speaking actor, a testament to his exceptional artistic status.
