Albert Dumortier

Albert Dumortier, born in Tournai in 1864 and died in Saint-Gilles in 1940, was a Belgian sculptor. A student of Charles Van der Stappen at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, he soon distinguished himself for his talent, winning the second Belgian Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1892, an award that consolidated his reputation. His career was characterized by the creation of numerous public monuments, busts, and decorative works that blend a realist approach with elegant Art Nouveau influences. Among his most celebrated works are the "Le Cracheur" (The Spitter) fountain in Brussels, the Monument to Charles de Coster located in the Ixelles Ponds, and his contribution of allegorical figures to the Edith Cavell Monument in Uccle. His skill in sculpting bronze and marble made him one of the leading artists on the Belgian sculptural scene between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leaving a lasting mark on the capital's urban landscape.
