Aleksandr Antonov
Aleksandr Pavlovich Antonov (1898-1962) was a Soviet theater and film actor, known primarily for his performances in silent cinema. He began his career on the stage, working with the Moscow Proletkult Theatre, before becoming one of the most recognizable faces of Soviet cinema in the 1920s. His international fame is linked to his collaboration with the director Sergei Eisenstein, for whom he played leading roles in two masterpieces: he was the workers' leader in *Strike* (1925) and, most notably, the charismatic Bolshevik sailor Grigory Vakulinchuk in *Battleship Potemkin* (1925), a role that enshrined him in cinema history. His career continued into the sound era, albeit in less iconic roles, appearing in films such as *The Girl with the Hatbox* (1927). For his contribution to the dramatic arts, in 1950 he was awarded the prestigious title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic).
