Alfio Fichera
Alfio Fichera (Catania, 1934) was an Italian painter and sculptor, a prominent figure in post-war abstract and informal art. His artistic career began in the 1950s, during which he developed a personal style strongly connected to the materials and nature of Sicily. In his works, he experimented with the use of unconventional materials such as sand, pumice, and lava dust, elements that lend his canvases a strong three-dimensionality and a deep connection to his homeland. Among his most notable pictorial cycles are "Vulcani" (Volcanoes) and "Spazi Concentrici" (Concentric Spaces), where the gestural quality of the mark is combined with a rigorous exploration of form and color. He exhibited in major national and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, and his works were presented in galleries and museums in Paris, New York, and various European cities. His work received significant critical acclaim, solidifying his position as one of the most original interpreters of Lyrical Abstraction in Italy.
