Alfred Lynch

Alfred Lynch (London, 26 January 1931 – Brighton, 16 December 2003) was a British actor. From a working-class background, he became a leading figure in post-war British theatre, particularly with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop and at the Royal Court Theatre. His most celebrated performance was as Mick in the original cast of Harold Pinter's *The Caretaker* in 1960. His film career was part of the British New Wave, with roles in films such as *On the Fiddle* (1961), Sidney Lumet's *The Hill* (1965) alongside Sean Connery, and Franco Zeffirelli's *The Taming of the Shrew* (1967), in which he played Tranio. He was also very active in television, appearing in numerous popular series, including *Manhunt* and *Doctor Who*. Although he did not receive major awards, Lynch is recognized as a versatile character actor and an important figure in the British theatrical and cinematic renewal of the 1960s, praised for his ability to portray complex and authentic characters.
