Amani Ballour
Amani Ballour is a Syrian pediatrician and activist, internationally known for managing an underground hospital, known as "The Cave," in Eastern Ghouta during the siege of the Syrian civil war. Starting as a volunteer, she was later elected to manage the facility, a position of great responsibility that challenged the patriarchal norms of her community. Under her leadership, the hospital treated thousands of civilians, especially children, who were victims of bombings and chemical attacks, operating under extreme conditions and with limited resources. Her work and courage are the focus of the 2019 documentary *The Cave* by Feras Fayyad, which received an Academy Award nomination. For her exceptional humanitarian commitment, she was awarded the Council of Europe's Raoul Wallenberg Prize in 2020. She later recounted her experience in a memoir of the same name, solidifying her status as a symbol of resilience and medical dedication in conflict zones.
