Anatoliy Kuznetsov

Anatoliy Vasilyevich Kuznetsov (Kyiv, 1929 – London, 1979) was a Soviet writer of Ukrainian origin, whose career is inextricably linked to the documentary novel *Babi Yar*. In this work, based on his direct experience as an eyewitness, he described the massacre of Jews and other civilians carried out by the Nazis in his native city in 1941. The book was first published in 1966 in the Soviet magazine *Yunost*, but in a heavily censored version that omitted references to antisemitism and criticism of the Soviet regime. Frustrated by ideological pressures and censorship, Kuznetsov defected to the United Kingdom in 1969. After settling in London, he worked for Radio Liberty and published the complete, uncensored version of his masterpiece. Although he received no official recognition during his lifetime, the work has earned him immense posthumous international fame, establishing *Babi Yar* as one of the most powerful and historically significant testimonies on the Shoah in Eastern Europe.
