Anna May Wong

Anna May Wong, born Wong Liu Tsong, was the first Chinese-American movie star in Hollywood. Her career began in the silent film era, and she secured her first leading role in *The Toll of the Sea* (1922). She achieved international fame with films such as *The Thief of Bagdad* (1924) and *Shanghai Express* (1932), alongside Marlene Dietrich. However, frustrated by the stereotypical roles offered to her in Hollywood, she moved to Europe, where she worked in British and German productions, obtaining more complex parts. Upon returning to the United States, she starred in films such as *Daughter of Shanghai* (1937) and was the first Asian-American actress to lead a U.S. television series, *The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong*. A pioneer in the fight against racial stereotypes, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. In 2022, she became the first Asian American to be featured on a U.S. coin, the quarter.
