Anny Ondra
Anny Ondra, the stage name of Anna Sophie Ondráková, was a Czech actress active mainly in silent and early sound cinema. She achieved fame in the 1920s with popular comedies produced in Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Germany, establishing herself as one of the most beloved European stars. Her international career is inextricably linked to her collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock, for whom she starred in *The Manxman* (1929) and, most notably, *Blackmail* (1929). The latter, the director's first sound film, is famous for the difficulty caused by her strong accent, which required her voice to be dubbed live by another actress. Subsequently, she continued her career mainly in Germany, where, together with her husband, the boxer Max Schmeling, she founded the production company Ondra-Schmeling-Film. For her long and significant contribution to German cinema, in 1970 she was awarded the prestigious Filmband in Gold.
