Anwar Congo

Anwar Congo (1937–2019) was an Indonesian gangster and paramilitary leader, whose notoriety is linked to the anti-communist massacres of 1965-66. Originally a petty criminal active in the black market for cinema tickets in Medan, Sumatra, Congo became one of the most prolific executioners in the death squads after General Suharto's coup. Along with other members of the right-wing Pancasila Youth movement, he was responsible for the killing of hundreds of people accused of being communists. He gained international fame as the main subject of Joshua Oppenheimer's 2012 documentary *The Act of Killing*. In the film, Congo and his accomplices reenact their past crimes, adopting the styles of their favorite film genres. The film received global critical acclaim, winning a BAFTA Award and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary, turning Congo into a chilling and complex symbol of the banality of evil and impunity.
