Arthur Howard
Arthur Howard, born Arthur John Howard (January 10, 1910 – June 18, 1995), was a prolific British character actor, the brother of the more famous actor Leslie Howard. His long career, spanning over fifty years, encompassed theatre, film, and television. He became a familiar face in post-war British cinema, specialising in roles as authoritative but often inept figures, such as headmasters, vicars, and bureaucrats. Among his numerous film appearances are those in classics such as *Passport to Pimlico* (1949), *The Ladykillers* (1955), and the *St. Trinian's* film series. However, his most iconic and widely recognised role is that of the nervous and pedantic deputy headmaster, later headmaster, Mr. Pettigrew in the popular television sitcom *Please Sir!* (1968-1972) and its spin-off, *The Fenn Street Gang*. Although he did not receive any major awards, his contribution was widely appreciated for his ability to make every supporting character memorable, solidifying his reputation as one of the most reliable and beloved character actors of his generation.
