Arthur Treacher
Arthur Treacher (1894–1975) was an English character actor, best known for his roles as an impeccable and composed butler. His tall stature, stiff bearing, and precise diction made him the archetype of the British servant in classic Hollywood cinema. During his prolific film career, he appeared in numerous films throughout the 1930s and 1940s, often alongside Shirley Temple in pictures such as *Heidi* and *The Little Princess*. His stage career included major Broadway productions and earned him a prestigious award: in 1962, he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance in *A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum*. Later in life, he reached a new generation of audiences as the announcer and comic foil on *The Merv Griffin Show*. His name was also licensed to the restaurant chain Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips, solidifying his image in American popular culture.
