Auriol Lee
Auriol Lee (London, September 13, 1880 – New York, July 2, 1941) was a British actress and theatre director, celebrated for her work on Broadway. After beginning her career as an actress on the London stage, she moved to the United States, where she became one of the most respected female directors of her time. Her fame is inextricably linked to her fruitful collaboration with playwright John Van Druten, for whom she directed numerous highly successful productions, most notably *There's Always Juliet* (1932), *The Distaff Side* (1934), and *Old Acquaintance* (1940). Her directorial style was known for its psychological subtlety and meticulous direction of actors. Although she did not receive any formal awards, her primary recognition came from the great critical and public acclaim that established her as one of the few prominent female directors in a male-dominated field. Her influential career was tragically cut short by her death in a traffic accident in New York.
