Barbel Fanger

Barbel Fanger, born in Germany in 1957, is a renowned contemporary ceramist, internationally recognized for her mastery of the Raku technique. After completing her training at the State College of Ceramics in Höhr-Grenzhausen, she founded her own studio in 1985, dedicating herself to rigorous artistic research. Her work is distinguished by essential sculptural forms, often inspired by vessels and containers, characterized by precise geometry and formal elegance. Through Raku, Fanger explores the dialogue between the control of form and the unpredictability of the firing process, achieving unique surfaces marked by craquelure and the effects of smoke. Her work has received major awards, including the Bavarian State Prize and the Hessian State Prize for Arts and Crafts. Her creations are held in numerous public and private museum collections in Europe and around the world, consolidating her position as one of the most influential figures in modern Raku ceramics.
