Basil Collins was an influential British industrial designer, recognised as a pioneering figure in the use of plastics in the design of consumer products. His career was primarily associated with British Industrial Plastics (BIP), where from 1947 he directed the Product Design Unit, a unit established to explore and promote the aesthetic and functional potential of new polymer materials. His work aimed to elevate the perception of plastic, demonstrating that it could be a first-choice material and not just a cheap substitute. His most iconic works include the 'Beetleware' melamine formaldehyde tableware, a baby bath, and widespread public litter bins, all characterised by a clean and functional design. In addition to his design work, Collins was also an important educator at the Central School of Art and Design in London. For his significant contribution to the industry, in 1974 he was awarded the prestigious title of Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) by the Royal Society of Arts.
