Basil Radford

Basil Radford (1897-1952) was a British character actor whose career began on the stage before he established himself in film. He is best remembered for his artistic partnership with Naunton Wayne, with whom he played the cricket-obsessed English duo, Charters and Caldicott. The pair debuted in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller *The Lady Vanishes* (1938) and reprised their roles in *Night Train to Munich* (1940) and in other film and radio productions, achieving enormous popularity. Beyond this famous role, Radford was a versatile performer in numerous successful British films, including *Whisky Galore!* (1949), *Passport to Pimlico* (1949), and *The Winslow Boy* (1948). His ability to portray typically English characters, often gruff but with a heart of gold, made him one of the most beloved and recognizable figures of his time, consolidating his status as an essential actor in the golden age of UK cinema, despite never having received major awards.
