
Bernard Atha
Bernard Atha (1928-2022) was a British actor, politician, and arts administrator, whose career was distinguished by its versatility and his civic engagement. As an actor, he is primarily remembered for his role as the youth employment officer in Ken Loach's acclaimed film *Kes* (1969) and as the narrator of the children's television series *TUGS* (1989). Alongside his acting, he had a long and influential career in public service, serving for decades as a Leeds City Councillor and holding the office of Lord Mayor of the city. His commitment also extended to arts administration, as chairman of the Leeds Grand Theatre, and to sports, with senior roles in national swimming and diving organisations. For his extensive contribution to public life and the arts, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
