Bert Remsen

Herbert "Bert" Remsen (1925–1999) was a prolific American character actor and casting director, known for his long and versatile career. After starting as an actor, a serious on-set accident during the television series *Kraft Suspense Theatre* in 1964 forced him into a hiatus, prompting him to successfully reinvent himself as a casting director for productions such as *The Andy Griffith Show*. It was his friend, director Robert Altman, who convinced him to return to acting, making him a recurring and iconic presence in his films, such as *McCabe & Mrs. Miller* (1971), *California Split* (1974), and *Nashville* (1975). His subsequent career includes hundreds of appearances, with memorable roles in highly successful films such as *Road House* (1989), *Dick Tracy* (1990), and *A Few Good Men* (1992). With his weathered appearance and authoritative presence, Remsen specialized in portraying authority figures and world-weary characters, leaving an indelible mark on American film and television through a unique career path.
