Brutus Pedreira

Brutus Pedreira (Salvador de Bahia, 1909 – Rome, 1974) was a Brazilian-born Italian architect, urban planner, and critic. He moved to Italy in the 1930s and trained in Rome, where he became a central figure in the architectural debate of the post-World War II period. His career was closely linked to his professional partnership with the architect Luigi Moretti, with whom he collaborated on major projects. Among his most celebrated works is the building known as Il Girasole (1947-1950) in Rome, considered a masterpiece of Rationalism and an innovative example of the dialogue between a building and its urban context. He was also a co-founder and editor of the magazine *Spazio*, an influential journal of architectural and artistic culture, and an active member of the Association for Organic Architecture (APAO). His contribution is recognized for introducing elements of Brazilian Modernist culture to Italy, serving as a bridge between the two architectural scenes and promoting a critical and interdisciplinary approach to design.
