Burr McIntosh

Burr McIntosh (1862–1942) was a multifaceted American figure, a pioneer of photojournalism, publisher, actor, and writer. His photographic career took off as a war correspondent during the Spanish-American War, but he became best known for his portraits of prominent figures of the era, including politicians such as Theodore Roosevelt and theater stars, establishing himself as one of the first celebrity photographers. In 1903, he founded the magazine *The Burr McIntosh Monthly*, highly regarded for the high quality of its photographic reproductions and for its coverage of social, theatrical, and sporting life. Concurrently, he pursued an acting career, working both on Broadway and in silent films, where he appeared in important D.W. Griffith films, including *Way Down East* (1920). He also authored books such as *The Little I Saw of Cuba*. He is recognized for his foundational role in photojournalism and his profound influence on the visual representation of celebrity culture in the early 20th century.
