Camilla Spira

Camilla Spira (Hamburg, March 1, 1906 – Berlin, August 25, 1997) was a German actress. The daughter of actors Fritz and Lotte Spira, she became a celebrated stage and screen performer in the Weimar Republic, appearing in numerous successful productions. Of Jewish descent, she was forced to leave Germany in 1933 with the rise of Nazism. She found refuge in Amsterdam, where she continued her artistic work. She survived the war, unlike her parents who were deported and killed, and returned to Germany to resume her career, working intensively in East Berlin for the DEFA film studios and on major stages. She later moved to West Berlin, remaining active in film and television until a late age. Her versatile career spanned different eras and political regimes, demonstrating remarkable resilience. For her long and outstanding contribution to German cinema, she was awarded the prestigious Filmband in Gold in 1986.
