Carmela Fichera
Carmela Fichera (Catania, 1883 – Catania, 1968) was an Italian engineer, architect, and academic, considered one of the pioneering women in the fields of engineering and architecture in Italy. She was one of the first women to graduate in Civil Engineering from the Royal School of Application for Engineers in Rome in 1908. Subsequently, she pursued an academic career, becoming an associate professor of Drawing at the University of Catania. Her professional work was closely linked to the reconstruction efforts following the 1908 earthquake; she designed numerous buildings, including schools in Paternò and Riposto and private residences, characterized by a style that ranged from Eclecticism to Art Nouveau. Her most celebrated work is the Villino Fichera in Catania, a notable example of her stylistic signature. She is primarily recognized for her role as a trailblazer for women in technical professions, in an era when these career paths were almost exclusively male-dominated, establishing herself in both private practice and academia.
