
Chang Gan-Wing
Chang Gan-Wing (Loris) is a Canadian virologist and immunologist, a professor at the University of Alberta, and the director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology. His career has been dedicated to the study of the hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) viruses. He is internationally recognized for developing a promising therapy for chronic hepatitis B, based on a novel antiviral strategy that aims to eliminate viral DNA from infected liver cells, offering the potential for a cure. His work has advanced the understanding of the mechanisms of viral replication and virus-host interaction, significantly contributing to the development of new drugs and therapeutic approaches. For his foundational scientific contributions, he has received numerous high-profile awards and honors, including the prestigious Gairdner Foundation International Award, his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada, all of which attest to the global impact of his work.
