
Charles Paton
Charles Paton (1874-1970) was a prolific Scottish actor. He began his career on stage before making his film debut in the 1920s, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after character actors in British cinema with over 300 credits. Specializing in supporting roles, he often played authoritative or humble figures such as magistrates, vicars, and shopkeepers, bringing authenticity to every scene. His numerous appearances include notable films such as Alfred Hitchcock's *The 39 Steps* (1935), the comedy *Oh, Mr Porter!* (1937), *Pygmalion* (1938), and *The Man in the White Suit* (1951). Although he did not receive major awards, his face became a familiar and essential presence, cementing his reputation as one of the most reliable and ubiquitous supporting actors in the classic British film industry, remaining active until the 1950s.
