Charles Winninger (May 26, 1884 – January 27, 1969) was an American actor whose career spanned vaudeville, the stage, film, radio, and television. He rose to great fame on Broadway in 1927, creating the iconic role of Captain Andy Hawks in the original production of the musical *Show Boat*, a role he reprised in the 1936 film version. In Hollywood, he became a prolific and well-regarded character actor, often cast as jovial father figures, gruff benefactors, or businessmen with a heart of gold. His most notable performances include roles in *State Fair* (1945), *Destry Rides Again* (1939), and *Nothing Sacred* (1937). For his role in the film *Three Smart Girls* (1936), he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His versatility allowed him to remain a constant and beloved presence in American entertainment for over fifty years.
