Cheng Pei-Pei
Cheng Pei-Pei (1946–2024) was a Chinese actress, considered the first great heroine of martial arts cinema. She rose to international fame in the 1960s as a leading star for Hong Kong's Shaw Brothers Studio, establishing herself as the "Queen of Wuxia." Her most iconic role from that period was as Golden Swallow in King Hu's classic *Come Drink with Me* (1966), a character that defined a new archetype for the fighting heroine, which she reprised in the sequel *Golden Swallow* (1968). After a long hiatus from acting, she returned to global prominence portraying the ruthless Jade Fox in Ang Lee's film *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon* (2000). For this acclaimed performance, she won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Hong Kong Film Awards. In subsequent years, she continued to work in international productions, including the Disney film *Mulan* (2020), cementing her status as a film legend.
