Chor Yuen

Chor Yuen (1934-2022), born Cheung Po-kin, was one of Hong Kong's most prolific and influential directors. His career, spanning over 120 films, began in Cantonese cinema in the 1960s but reached its zenith in the 1970s at the Shaw Brothers studio. He is universally recognized as the master of the "romantic wuxia," revolutionizing the martial arts film genre with a sumptuous, atmospheric, and almost dreamlike visual style. His most celebrated works are often adaptations of Gu Long's novels, such as Killer Clans (1976) and Clans of Intrigue (1977), characterized by complex plots and baroque aesthetics. In addition to wuxia, he directed seminal films in other genres, including the cult classic Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan (1972) and the box-office-smashing comedy The House of 72 Tenants (1973), which revitalized Cantonese-language cinema.
