Christine Schuler
Christine Schuler Deschryver is an activist and conservationist internationally renowned for her work in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her career is focused on advocating for human rights, particularly in support of women who have survived extreme sexual violence, often used as a weapon of war. A cornerstone of her work is the "Cité de la Joie" (City of Joy) in Bukavu, a transformative leadership center she co-founded and directs, which offers victims a path to healing, education, and tools for economic independence. Working in close collaboration with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege at the Panzi Hospital, she has developed a holistic care model. For her tireless work, Schuler Deschryver has received numerous prestigious international awards in the field of human rights and peace, establishing herself as a leading global figure in the fight against gender-based violence and for women's empowerment in conflict zones.
