Claude Lanzmann

Claude Lanzmann (Paris, 27 November 1925 – Paris, 5 July 2018) was a French director, writer, and journalist, a central figure in post-war intellectualism. After participating in the Resistance, he became the editor of the prestigious journal *Les Temps Modernes*, founded by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. His worldwide fame is linked to the monumental documentary film *Shoah* (1985), a work of over nine hours dedicated to the extermination of the Jews of Europe. Made over twelve years and without the use of any archival footage, the film is based exclusively on the direct testimonies of survivors, perpetrators, and bystanders, revolutionizing how the memory of the catastrophe is represented. His filmography also includes works such as *Pourquoi Israël* (1973), *Tsahal* (1994), and *Le Dernier des Injustes* (2013). For his work, he received numerous accolades, including an Honorary César Award in 1986 and the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2013, which established him as one of the most powerful and rigorous voices in documentary cinema.
