Colin Welland

Colin Welland (1934-2015) was a British actor and screenwriter. He began his career as an actor, gaining recognition for his role as the teacher Mr. Farthing in Ken Loach's film *Kes* (1969) and for his performance in *Straw Dogs* (1971). For his television work, he won a BAFTA award for Best Actor. However, he achieved international fame as a screenwriter, winning his first BAFTA for the film *Yanks* (1979). His greatest triumph was the screenplay for *Chariots of Fire* (1981), which earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. During his acceptance speech, he delivered the famous line: “The British are coming!”. His other works include the screenplays for *Twice in a Lifetime* (1985) and *A Dry White Season* (1989), which solidified his status as a leading figure in British cinema.
