Carver Dana Andrews (1909-1992) was an American actor whose career peaked in the 1940s. He became a star for his role as detective Mark McPherson in Otto Preminger's film noir classic *Laura* (1944). His most acclaimed performance is as war veteran Fred Derry in the Academy Award-winning film *The Best Years of Our Lives* (1946), directed by William Wyler. His filmography includes other notable titles such as the western *The Ox-Bow Incident* (1943), the film noir *Where the Sidewalk Ends* (1950), and the British horror film *Night of the Demon* (1957). Specializing in roles of troubled, tough men of underlying integrity, he saw his career decline due to alcoholism, which he later publicly addressed. Although he never received an Academy Award nomination, his standing in the industry was confirmed by his election as president of the Screen Actors Guild, a position he held from 1963 to 1965.
