David Maysles

David Maysles (1931-1987) was an American director and documentary filmmaker, a pioneer of Direct Cinema along with his brother Albert. Their collaboration defined an observational and non-interventionist style, with Albert on camera and David responsible for sound and editing, a crucial role in shaping the narrative of their films. Their most influential works include *Salesman* (1969), an immersion into the lives of door-to-door salesmen; *Gimme Shelter* (1970), which documents the tragic Rolling Stones concert at Altamont; and the cult classic *Grey Gardens* (1975), an intimate portrait of two eccentric relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The Maysles brothers' work received numerous accolades, including awards at the Sundance Film Festival and a Guggenheim Fellowship for David. Their influence on modern documentary is considered fundamental, having established new standards for realism and intimacy in portraying reality.
