Dick Carter
Richard "Dick" Carter was an American naval architect and a prominent figure in the world of international yacht racing, particularly from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s. His career took off almost suddenly in 1965 when his first design, the 34-foot *Rabbit*, which he designed and helmed himself, surprisingly won the prestigious Fastnet Race. His designs were distinguished by innovative solutions such as the separated keel and rudder and the introduction of the trim tab, breaking with the conventions of the time. Among his most celebrated creations are winning yachts such as *Tina* and *Red Rooster*, the revolutionary 39-meter schooner *Vendredi 13*, and commercially successful designs like the Carter 33 and 39. Carter's boats dominated the offshore racing scene under the IOR rule, claiming victories in top-level competitions such as the Admiral's Cup and the One Ton Cup, solidifying his reputation as one of the most influential yacht designers of his generation.
