Divine
Divine, the pseudonym of Harris Glenn Milstead (1945-1988), was an American actor, singer, and drag queen who became an indelible icon of underground culture and "trash" cinema. Born in Baltimore, she became the muse and lead actor for director John Waters, joining his "Dreamlanders" troupe. Her fame exploded with the role of Babs Johnson in the cult film Pink Flamingos (1972), where she proclaimed herself "the filthiest person alive," cementing her transgressive and anti-bourgeois image. In addition to controversial early films like Female Trouble, Divine also achieved success as a disco singer in the 1980s (with hits like "You Think You're a Man"). She finally achieved mainstream critical acclaim shortly before her untimely death, thanks to her unforgettable dual performance (male and female) in Waters' film Hairspray (1988).
