Don Donahue

Don Donahue (1942-2017) was a publisher, editor, and key figure in the U.S. underground comix movement. He is best known for founding the publishing company Apex Novelties and for being the first publisher of Robert Crumb's *Zap Comix* in 1968, a work considered foundational to the genre. He played a crucial role in the printing and distribution of the first issue, contributing decisively to the launch of the countercultural comics movement. Through his publishing company, he also published the works of other important artists of the era, including S. Clay Wilson, Rick Griffin, and Victor Moscoso, consolidating his position as a leading figure in the San Francisco scene. In addition to his work as a publisher, he also dedicated himself to graphic design and the preservation of the history of underground comix. For his fundamental contribution to the development of the ninth art, he was posthumously inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2017.
