Donald Finlay

Donald Finlay (Christchurch, 27 May 1909 – Great Missenden, 18 April 1970) was a British athlete and Royal Air Force (RAF) officer, known for a successful career in both sports and the military. Specialising in the 110 metres hurdles, he won the bronze medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, followed by a silver medal in the same event at the 1936 Berlin Games. His accolades also include a gold medal at the 1938 European Championships and one at the 1934 Empire Games. At the 1948 London Games, he had the honour of taking the Olympic Oath on behalf of all the athletes. Concurrently, he served as an officer in the RAF, distinguishing himself as a fighter pilot during the Second World War and participating in the Battle of Britain. He reached the rank of Group Captain and was awarded prestigious military honours, including the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and the Air Force Cross (AFC), for his courage and service.
