Doris Dowling was an American actress whose career was divided between Hollywood and post-war Italian cinema. After her Broadway debut, she gained recognition with her first film role in Billy Wilder's *The Lost Weekend* (1945), a film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture and the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. The following year, she consolidated her status as a film noir icon by starring in *The Blue Dahlia* (1946), based on a screenplay by Raymond Chandler. In the late 1940s, she moved to Italy, becoming a prominent figure in Neorealism. Her most celebrated performance of this period is in Giuseppe De Santis' film *Bitter Rice* (1949), where she starred alongside Vittorio Gassman and Silvana Mangano. Upon returning to the United States, her career continued predominantly with appearances in numerous popular television series until the 1980s.
