
Doris Mattes
Doris Mattes, born in 1957 in Vorarlberg, is an Austrian illustrator and author of children's books. After studying at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, she began her career as a freelance artist, establishing herself as one of the most recognizable voices in the children's publishing landscape. Her artistic work focuses primarily on picture books, where her distinctive style—characterized by vibrant colors, rich detail, and a poetic atmosphere—blends with delicate narratives. Among her most celebrated works are "Ich bin die kleine Katze" and "Ein Esel ist ein Esel ist ein Esel". Her contribution to the field has been widely recognized with numerous awards, including the Österreichischer Kinder- und Jugendbuchpreis (Austrian Children's and Young People's Book Prize), which she has won on multiple occasions, and the Illustration Prize of the City of Vienna.
