Specializing in supporting roles, she often portrayed maternal figures, neighbors, or everyday women, becoming a familiar face in classic American cinema. Her most notable performances include her role in the Academy Award-winning film *The Best Years of Our Lives* (1946), where she played the mother of Dana Andrews' character, and in *The Shepherd of the Hills* (1941). She also worked with notable directors such as Stanley Kubrick in *The Killing* (1956). Her prolific film career, with hundreds of credits, was complemented by numerous appearances in popular television series, including *Perry Mason* and *The Twilight Zone*.
