Dudley Digges (1879-1947) was an Irish stage and film actor, known for his prolific career as a character actor during the Golden Age of Hollywood. He began his career on the stage in Dublin with the Abbey Theatre before moving to the United States, where he became a prominent figure on Broadway, working extensively with the prestigious Theatre Guild. His film career, which primarily developed during the 1930s and 1940s, saw him portray memorable roles. His most celebrated performances include his role as Casper Gutman in the first version of *The Maltese Falcon* (1931), the chief detective in *The Invisible Man* (1933), and the ship's doctor, Bacchus, in the Oscar-winning film *Mutiny on the Bounty* (1935). Although he did not receive major individual awards for his film work, Digges was widely respected for his versatility and strong screen presence, which allowed him to excel in both authoritarian and eccentric roles, leaving a significant mark as one of the most reliable character actors of his era.
