Edward E. Clive, born Edward E. Clive-Bayley, was a Welsh stage actor and director, primarily active in 1930s Hollywood cinema. He began his career on the British stage before moving to the United States, where in 1926 he founded the Copley Theatre Company in Boston, which he directed for several years. With the advent of sound film, he established himself in Hollywood as one of the most prolific and recognizable character actors, specializing in roles as gruff but often comedic English gentlemen, butlers, inspectors, and officials. His most famous performances include the burgomaster in *Bride of Frankenstein* (1935), Constable Jaffers in *The Invisible Man* (1933), and the cabby in *The Hound of the Baskervilles* (1939). He also appeared in several films in the Charlie Chan and Bulldog Drummond series, solidifying his fame. Although he did not receive any major awards, his constant presence and his skill in portraying supporting characters made him an iconic face of classic American cinema.
