Edgar Buchanan (1903-1979) was an American actor. Originally a dentist by profession, he began his film career at the age of 36, quickly becoming a prolific and recognizable character actor. Specializing in roles of gruff yet kind-hearted characters, such as judges, sheriffs, or wise old men, he appeared in over 100 films. His most notable film performances include *The Talk of the Town* (1942) and *Shane* (1953). He achieved his greatest popularity on television playing the role of Uncle Joe Carson in the CBS sitcom *Petticoat Junction*, also appearing as the same character in *Green Acres* and *The Beverly Hillbillies*. His gravelly voice and fatherly appearance made him a familiar and beloved presence in Western films and comedies. For his contribution to the television industry, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
