Édouard Mathé

Édouard Mathé was a French director and actor, primarily active during the silent film era. His career is inextricably linked to the Gaumont film company and director Louis Feuillade, for whom he served as the principal and trusted assistant. In this role, he collaborated on the production of renowned serials such as *Fantômas* (1913-1914) and *Les Vampires* (1915-1916), helping to define the style of adventure cinema of the era. When Feuillade was called to the front during World War I, Mathé assumed the role of director, ensuring production continuity for Gaumont. His most significant works as a director include *La nouvelle mission de Judex* (1917), an ideal continuation of Feuillade's masterpiece, and films such as *Le Fils du destin* (1916) and *L'énigme* (1919). Although his fame is often overshadowed by that of his mentor, his work is recognized as fundamental for keeping the tradition of the crime and adventure serial alive during a critical period for French cinema.
