Eijirō Tōno (January 17, 1907 – September 8, 1994) was a Japanese actor whose prolific career spanned six decades, ranging from stage to film and television. A prominent figure in the *shingeki* theater movement, in 1944 he was among the founders of the prestigious Haiyuza Theatre Company. In film, he is known for his collaborations with major postwar Japanese directors. He appeared in numerous films by Akira Kurosawa, including *Seven Samurai* (1954) and *Sanjuro* (1962), and was a frequent presence in Yasujirō Ozu's films, delivering a memorable performance in *Tokyo Story* (1953). On television, his fame is inextricably linked to the lead role in the long-running drama series *Mito Kōmon*, which he played for over 300 episodes from 1969 to 1983. For his significant contribution to the arts, he was awarded the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon in 1973 and named a Person of Cultural Merit in 1980, one of the highest civilian honors in Japan.
