Eitarō Shindō

Eitarō Shindō (Fukuoka, November 10, 1899 – February 18, 1977) was a Japanese actor. Active since the silent film era, his career spanned over four decades, establishing him as one of the most important character actors of his time. He is best known for his frequent collaboration with director Kenji Mizoguchi, for whom he played memorable roles in masterpieces such as *The Life of Oharu* (1952), *Ugetsu* (1953), and especially *Sansho the Bailiff* (1954), where he portrayed the cruel eponymous character. His filmography also includes appearances in works by other masters, such as the role of the gangster in Akira Kurosawa's *Ikiru* (1952). For his skill, in 1955 he was awarded the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in *The Crucified Lovers* and *The Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji*. Specializing in authoritarian and morally complex figures, he remains a key figure in post-war Japanese cinema.
