Ernest Torrence (born Ernest Torrence-Thomson; Glasgow, June 26, 1878 – New York, May 15, 1933) was a Scottish actor, active primarily during the silent film era and the early sound era. A trained baritone and pianist, he began his career on the London and Broadway stages before moving to Hollywood. His imposing physical presence and versatility made him a much sought-after character actor, often cast as an antagonist or a rugged character. His most celebrated performances include the drama *Tol'able David* (1921), the epic western *The Covered Wagon* (1923), and the role of Clopin in *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* (1923), alongside Lon Chaney. He was also a memorable adversary for Buster Keaton in *Steamboat Bill, Jr.* (1928) and portrayed Professor Moriarty in *Sherlock Holmes* (1932). For his contribution to the motion picture industry, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
