Erskine Sanford

Erskine Sanford (Trinidad, November 19, 1885 – Los Angeles, July 7, 1969) was an American actor, primarily known for his long collaboration with Orson Welles. A key member of the Mercury Theatre, he participated in numerous theatrical and radio productions of the company before following it to Hollywood. His film career is inextricably linked to Welles, who directed him in memorable roles such as that of Herbert Carter, the bumbling newspaper editor in *Citizen Kane* (1941), and in films such as *The Magnificent Ambersons* (1942), *Journey into Fear* (1943), and *The Lady from Shanghai* (1947). He also appeared in films by other directors, including Fritz Lang's *Ministry of Fear* (1944). Although he did not win any major awards, his recognition stems from his status as a reliable character actor and from his fundamental contribution to one of the most influential theater and film companies of the 20th century.
